A 100-watt continuous output covers low-draw electronics and nothing with a large heating element or motor.

What fits in the 100-watt envelope:

  • Laptop — typically 45–65 watts while charging, then far less once the battery is full
  • Wi-Fi router or modem — usually 10–20 watts, and worth every one of them during an outage
  • LED lights — a modern LED bulb draws 5–10 watts, so two or three are easy
  • Phone and tablet charging — 5–20 watts per device
  • Small fans or a portable radio — under 30 watts on most models

Why Startup Surge Breaks The Wattage Label

Running It Without Getting Hurt

Portable generators cause carbon monoxide deaths every year, and the rules for avoiding that are not optional. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission safety alert on portable generator hazards is blunt: run them outdoors only, at least 20 feet from the home, with the exhaust pointed away from doors, windows, and vents.

Opening the garage door does not make garage use safe. Neither does a basement, crawlspace, or shed. CO is invisible and odorless, so a working CO alarm inside the home is the backstop, not a substitute for distance.

  1. Set the unit on a dry, level outdoor surface, well clear of any opening into the house.
  2. Plug devices straight into the generator, or use a heavy-duty, outdoor-rated, grounded extension cord sized for the load. Indoor-rated cords outdoors are a shock risk.
  3. Never plug the generator into a wall outlet to power house wiring. That requires a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician.
  4. Shut it down and let it cool before refueling. Never add fuel to a running generator.
  5. Keep it dry. Wet conditions raise electrocution risk, so protect the unit from rain per the owner’s manual.

Write down what you actually need to keep alive. If the list is a router, a laptop, a couple of lights, and phones, a 100-watt portable generator does the job cleanly and quietly.

Add up the running watts. Add the largest startup surge on the list. If the total exceeds 100 watts — or if any item is a motor, compressor, or heating element — step up to a bigger unit rather than hoping the little one hangs on. Then keep every device plugged in directly, run the generator 20 feet from the house, and keep that CO alarm working.
