Fixes are often simple — a tripped breaker, an unprimed housing, a kinked suction hose — and checking them first saves hours and money.
Troubleshooting a Water Pump: Work the List In Order
Run through these checks in sequence; most failures reveal themselves by step two or three. Skip nothing: the cause is usually the one thing you haven’t looked at yet.
- Confirm power. Check the breaker or fuse first, then verify voltage at the pump terminals with a multimeter. If you can’t test wiring safely, stop and call an electrician. Disconnect power before opening the pump housing, terminal box, or touching anything beyond visual inspection — a capacitor can hold a lethal charge after the pump is unplugged.
- Prime the pump if the model requires it. Many pumps must have the housing filled with water before they can pull from the source. Find the fill port or prime plug in your manual and top it off before restarting.
- Inspect the suction side. Look along the hose from water source to pump for leaks, kinks, or loose connections. Clean a plugged strainer or foot valve. Honda identifies a leaking suction hose and a plugged strainer as prime-failure causes; a pump that pulls air through a leak will lose prime and underperform.
- Vent trapped air. On hydronic or closed-loop systems, an air-bound pump can’t circulate water. Xylem/Bell & Gossett directs venting the system, and venting the pump casing itself if it is partially air-bound.
- Check for discharge restriction and lift limits. Long or narrow outlet hoses increase back pressure and cut flow. If static suction lift is too high, lower the pump closer to the water or shorten the suction hose.
- Look for internal or cavitation damage. If the pump is noisy, grinding, vibrating, or rattling, suspect cavitation, a worn impeller, bearing wear, or loose internal parts. Honda identifies cavitation by a grinding noise and impeller pitting. Keep the strainer clean and use the shortest possible suction hose with diameter equal to or larger than the pump’s suction port.
Check The Impeller And Casing When Performance Stays Low
Low discharge that survives every external fix usually points to problems inside the pump: a worn impeller, a scored volute, debris blockage, or freeze damage.
With power disconnected, open the pump and clear any debris from the impeller and inlet passages. Impeller blades that are pitted, bent, or worn down will need replacing — cavitation does that over time. Disconnect the outlet valve gradually at startup; opening it fully on some systems can overload the motor. After use, drain the housing completely; frozen water expands and cracks the casing, ruining the pump. Honda specifies draining the housing after use.
