How Do Automatic Curtains Work? Motors, Tracks, and Remote Control Explained

Automatic curtains move when a motor turns a belt inside a track, sliding curtain runners that carry the fabric open or closed.

The motor sits at one end of the track and drives a belt or cable loop running its full length. Runners clip onto that belt, curtains hook onto the runners, and when the motor turns, the belt drags every runner along with it — one smooth motion from closed to open. The rest of the system is just how you tell the motor what to do.

What Are The Parts Of An Automatic Curtain System?

  • Motor: the drive unit mounted at one end of the track or inside the drive housing. It rotates the belt and holds the stop and position memory.
  • Track or rail: the aluminum channel that hides the mechanism. It carries the runners and keeps the belt aligned. Some systems require a specific rail profile — Aqara’s Curtain Driver E1 manual, for example, asks you to choose I-Rail or U-Rail in the app.
  • Belt or cable loop: the moving part inside the track. It loops from the motor around a pulley at the far end, so the two curtain halves move in opposite directions for a center-open layout.
  • Runners or carriers: small gliders that ride the belt. Curtain hooks or rings attach here, which is why a single motor can pull the whole panel.

One layout note worth checking before you buy: center-open and side-open arrangements are both standard, but double-sided curtains that open from the middle need two drive units on some systems. The Aqara Curtain Driver E1 manual states plainly that double-sided curtains require two E1 units.

How Do You Control An Automatic Curtain Motor?

Control runs through a receiver built into the motor, which accepts signals from a remote, a wall switch, an app, or a voice assistant depending on the model. A basic kit ships with an RF remote and nothing else. A smart kit adds a radio that talks to a hub, and the hub relays commands from your phone or a voice assistant — Tuya Smart / Smart Life, Aqara Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri all appear across current product documentation.

The catch with smart control is the hub. It is often sold separately, and without it the app and voice features simply do not turn on. Blindsmart’s Tuya Zigbee curtain motor requires a Tuya Zigbee Hub (M6) for app and voice control, and the hub is not in the box; Aqara states the same about its Zigbee 3.0 Hub. Dedicated remote control, by contrast, needs no hub at all — which is why a remote-only kit is the simpler first purchase.

Pairing a remote follows a tight window. One manual describes pressing the motor’s Set key once, then pressing the remote’s up key within 5 seconds; the motor’s light flashes rapidly to confirm the link took. Miss the window and you start over.

What Can An Automatic Curtain Track Actually Do?

How Do You Install One?

Installation is a measuring job first and a mounting job second, and the track has to be dead level or the runners bind. The sequence below matches the steps in current manufacturer manuals.

  1. Measure the window opening and decide whether the track mounts to the ceiling or the wall.
  2. Cut or splice track sections to length. Check alignment at every joint — a manual for one motorized track warns that spliced sections must line up properly or the belt will catch.
  3. Mount the brackets level and secure them into studs or proper anchors. An unlevel track is the most common reason a curtain stalls halfway.
  4. Attach the motor to the track end and lock the track firmly in place.
  5. Feed the runners and belt into the channel, then hang the curtains on the runners.
  6. Power the motor — one motorized track kit is specified for AC100-240V — and pair the remote or hub.
