Most 12V wiring failures are ordering mistakes, not bad parts. Here’s how to wire 12V LED lights to a switch the way vehicle and boat 12V systems expect: fused +12V goes into the switch, out to the light’s positive lead, and the negative lead returns to ground.
That loop is the whole foundation. The two-switch version on this page just extends it, and 12V strips add a few supply and length rules worth knowing before you cut wire.
Basic 12V LED Wiring: One Switch
A single 12V switch sits in the positive supply line, and the wiring is four connections.
- Disconnect the battery’s negative terminal first if you’re working on a vehicle.
- Run fused +12V from the battery, fuse block, or a regulated 12V supply to one terminal on the switch.
- Run the switch’s other terminal to the light’s positive lead — the red wire on a single-color 12V strip.
- Connect the light’s negative lead back to battery negative, the fuse block, the busbar, or the supply’s negative terminal — the black/ground wire on strip lights.
Close the switch and the light should come on immediately. If it doesn’t, check the fuse first; a dead fuse is the most common silent failure in this circuit.
If You’re Using An Illuminated Rocker Switch
An illuminated rocker can run from any 12V source, but its indicator LED needs a proper ground path. Most illuminated rockers are five-pin switches: fused 12V lands on the power-in pin, the output pin feeds the load, and the ground pin connects to the negative side. Pin positions vary by manufacturer, so follow the pinout printed on the switch or its datasheet before crimping.
For high-current gear such as light bars, pumps, or winches, don’t run the full load through the switch. Use the switch to trigger a relay and let the relay handle the heavy current. One more surprise: an illuminated switch in a sleeping area can stay annoyingly bright at night, even when the light it controls is off.
Can Two Switches Control One 12V LED Light?
Yes. Two ON/ON switches wired as a two-way pair let either switch turn one LED light on or off.
- Run fused +12V to the center terminal of the first switch.
- Jump top-to-top and bottom-to-bottom between the two switches.
- Run the center terminal of the second switch to the light’s positive lead.
- Connect the light’s negative lead back to battery negative, the fuse block, or the busbar.
