Mortar, Waterproofing, and the Steam-Shower Slope

The mortar is where ceiling tile projects usually fail. Overhead tile needs a premium-quality, non-sag, improved modified dry-set cement mortar meeting ANSI A118.15; ordinary dry-set mortar sags, loses support, and drops tile after it cures. In fully enclosed steam showers, a low-perm waterproofing membrane is required on walls and ceiling, and A standard tub or shower ceiling stays flat; only a fully enclosed steam ceiling needs pitch.

Movement joints are the part homeowners skip. Every change of plane, especially the ceiling-to-wall transition, should be caulked or silicone-sealed rather than grouted.
