What Is an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)? | Explained

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a battery-backed device that keeps connected equipment running through short power outages and voltage dips.

Plug a desktop computer straight into the wall, and one brownout can corrupt an open file or shorten the life of a power supply. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) fixes that by sitting between the outlet and your equipment: it cleans incoming power, and when the mains fail it switches to its internal battery in milliseconds. The backup it provides is short by design, and understanding why that is matters more than the box itself.

NIST’s glossary defines a UPS as a device with an internal battery that lets connected devices run for at least a short time when the primary power source is lost. The Department of Energy describes the same equipment, in more technical terms, as converters, switches, and energy storage devices working together to maintain the flow of power when the input fails.

What an Uninterruptible Power Supply Actually Does

A UPS works as a bridge between wall power and the gear you care about. While the outlet is healthy, it filters and regulates the electricity flowing through; the moment power dips or dies, it takes over from its battery so quickly that connected equipment never notices a gap.

Inside a typical static UPS, four components do the work, and federal facilities guidance from the Whole Building Design Guide names them directly:

  • Rectifier/charger — converts AC from the wall into DC to keep the battery topped up.
  • Battery — stores the energy that carries the load during a failure.
  • Inverter — converts stored DC back into clean AC for your equipment.
  • Static bypass — lets power flow around the electronics when the unit is serviced or overloaded.
