An NPT tap is a cutting tool that forms tapered National Pipe Taper threads in a drilled hole, with the taper creating a pressure-tight seal when pipe fittings are assembled.
The NPT tap is the tool behind most threaded pipe connections in North America. Before a steel or brass fitting can be threaded into a valve, manifold, or pipe, an NPT tap cuts the matching female threads into the hole that holds it. The result is a connection that tightens into a seal — the same thread form found in household plumbing, air lines, hydraulic systems, and process piping.
What Makes an NPT Tap Different From a Regular Tap?
Standard machine taps cut straight threads that stay the same diameter from top to bottom. An NPT tap cuts threads that get slightly narrower as the tap goes deeper, following the 1:16 taper defined in the ANSI/ASME B1.20.1 standard. That’s about 3/4 inch of taper per foot on the diameter, working out to a taper angle of roughly 1°47′.
Because the thread is tapered, the male and female threads wedge together as the fitting tightens. The interference builds gradually instead of all at once, which is why NPT joints seal by thread engagement. The same taper is why the tap must be stopped at the right depth — an NPT fitting has a defined seating range, and forcing it past that point can split the fitting or strip the threads.
Common NPT Sizes and Tap Drill Sizes
Each NPT size has a specific pilot hole diameter, and using the wrong drill size is the most common mistake in pipe threading. A hole drilled too small makes the tap hard to turn and can break it; one drilled too large leaves threads that are too shallow to seal. How To Use an NPT Tap Correctly
Drill the correct pilot hole first, then cut the threads with the matching NPT tap so the taper forms gradually as the tap advances. Use cutting fluid on metal, back the tap out a quarter turn for every full turn in to clear chips, and stop at proper thread engagement instead of forcing the tap deeper.
NPT’s taper alone is not a universal substitute for sealant in fluid systems. For most pressure applications, wrap PTFE tape or apply pipe dope to the male threads before assembly. The taper wedges the threads together, but the sealant fills the tiny spiral leak path between the thread crests and roots — a dry NPT joint can weep even when it feels tight.
Watch for these common mistakes:
- Confusing NPT with NPS. Both are covered under ASME B1.20.1, but NPT is tapered and NPS is straight. They are not interchangeable.
- Mixing thread standards. Other regions use different pipe thread forms, so a fitting from overseas may not match NPT threads even if it looks similar.
- Assuming a 60° thread means compatibility. The taper and the standard must match — not just the angle.
- Over-tightening. The seal depends on taper interference, not brute force. Too much torque damages threads and fittings.
