Finding the right surge protector for your home electronics comes down to three things: independent safety certification, a meaningful joule rating, and honest matching to what you’ll plug in. The wrong choice — or a plain power strip sold as protection — leaves your TV, router, or desktop exposed to the exact surges you bought it to stop. Here’s what separates a real protective device from a strip that just looks like one.
What Makes a Surge Protector “Good”?
The baseline for a good surge protector is UL 1449 listing. UL 1449 is the US safety and performance standard for surge protective devices, covering units on standard 50 or 60 Hz circuits not exceeding 1000 volts. When a unit carries that mark, a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory has verified it through listing, component recognition, and destructive and non-destructive testing.
Beyond the UL mark, three specs separate a useful protector from a decorative one:
- Joule rating. Higher numbers mean more absorbed surge energy before the unit sacrifices itself. Consumer models range from roughly 900 to 4320 joules; common ratings include 900, 1080, 1200, 2160, and 4320 J.

Keep the total connected load inside the unit’s limits — common models carry a 15A rating and 1800W maximum. These devices are built for electronics: desktop computers, routers, modems, TVs, printers, and scanners. Don’t daisy-chain strips together, and don’t plug space heaters or large kitchen appliances into a strip meant for sensitive gear.
Watch the indicator. When the protection LED shows failure or the unit shuts itself off, replace it — a protector that has absorbed a major surge has spent its capacity.

Common Mistakes That Leave Gear Exposed
