Surge Protector vs Power Strip | What Actually Protects

A surge protector guards connected electronics from voltage spikes; a power strip only adds extra outlets.

Most people plug their $1,500 TV into the wrong device. A power strip stretches one wall outlet into six or eight, and that’s all it does. A surge protector does that same job and shields your gear from the transient voltage spikes that can fry circuit boards.

Power Strip: An Outlet Multiplier, Nothing More

A power strip’s only job is giving you more receptacles. It reroutes electricity from the wall to multiple devices, but it has no protective components inside. If a lightning strike sends a surge down your home’s wiring, that surge passes straight through the strip into everything plugged into it.

This makes power strips perfectly fine for lamps, phone chargers, and other low-stakes gadgets. They’re a poor choice for expensive electronics. The confusion happens because many power strips look identical to surge protectors — same housing shape, same outlet count, same cord length.

Surge Protector: Outlets Plus Real Protection

A surge protector contains a metal oxide varistor (MOV) or similar component that detects voltage spikes and diverts the excess energy to the ground wire. Under normal conditions, electricity flows through unaffected. When a surge arrives, the internal element clamps the voltage down to a safe level before it reaches your devices.

UL 1449 is the safety standard that covers these surge protective devices (SPDs). The current edition, UL 1449 Ed. 5-2021, applies to enclosed and open-type SPDs designed for repeated limiting of transient surges on 50/60 Hz power circuits up to 1000 V, plus PV applications up to 1500 V dc. When you see a product stamped UL 1449, a third-party lab has verified its surge-limiting performance, not just its electrical safety.

Surge protectors matter most for sensitive electronics — computers, TVs, stereos — and for homes in storm-prone areas or on circuits shared with large motors, which can send surges down the line when they cycle on and off.

How To Tell Them Apart When Shopping

Never judge by looks. A multi-outlet strip with a metal case and a circuit breaker can still be a plain power strip. Check the product listing for two specific indicators:

  • Certification marks: Look for UL Listed or cUL Listed, and specifically UL 1449 for verified surge protection.
  • Let-through rating: This is the maximum voltage that passes through to your devices during a surge. Lower is better.

Features like built-in circuit breakers, diagnostic LEDs, and metal housings indicate overload protection and status monitoring — they do not, by themselves, prove surge suppression. The protection also only applies to devices actually plugged into the protector; anything on a separate wall outlet remains exposed.

Which One Should You Buy?

Buy a power strip for cheap, non-sensitive loads. Buy a surge protector for anything you’d be upset to replace — your television, desktop computer, gaming console, or home theater receiver. In storm-prone areas, UL Solutions specifically recommends surge protection for sensitive electronics because surges can travel through the power line from distant strikes and motor cycling.

One honest caveat: a surge protector absorbs spikes and its protective components degrade with each event. It won’t last forever, and its let-through rating tells you how much voltage actually reaches your gear during a surge. Check the product’s declared rating and replace the unit after a major surge event.
