If your PowerXL air fryer will not turn on, don’t panic. Most of the time, it’s a small issue:
- The basket is not seated right.
- The outlet has tripped.
- The unit shut down from heat.
Start with these quick checks. They solve most problems fast.
Why I wrote this guide
I fixed three broken PowerXL fryers. One was a 5096TS that would not power on. Another was a 3061TS that shut off while cooking. I put together these steps because they worked in real life.

Quick checklist
- Try another appliance in the same outlet.
- Push the basket in until you hear a click.
- Unplug, wait 5 minutes, then plug back in.
- If you’re in the U.S., press the Reset button on any kitchen GFCI outlet.
Step 1 — Power and outlet checks
Check the outlet first. Many times, the fryer looked dead, but the outlet was the real issue.
- Plug in a lamp or phone charger.
- If that also does not work, press the GFCI Reset button.
Step 2 — Cord and plug
Look at the cord. If it’s frayed, burnt, or bent — stop using the fryer.
If the cord is fine, push the plug in all the way. One 196DT I fixed had a loose plug. Once pushed in firm, the lights came back on.
Step 3 — Basket and safety switch
Each PowerXL has a safety switch. If the basket is not seated, the fryer will not run.
- Pull the basket out.
- Wipe crumbs and oil from the slot.
- Push the basket back in.
- Listen for a click.
If you don’t hear it, push a bit harder or shift the basket to line up with the notch.
Step 4 — Overheating and thermal fuse
If the fryer shuts off while cooking, it may have overheated.
- Unplug it.
- Let it cool for 30–60 minutes.
- Try again.
If it keeps shutting down, the thermal fuse may be blown. That part is cheap to replace.
Step 5 — Control panel and no-light cases
If no lights come on after you checked the outlet and basket:
- The control board fuse may have blown.
- Wires may be loose inside.
If under warranty, stop here and call PowerXL. If not, you can open the fryer (unplug first) and look for a small fuse or burned parts.

How to check the thermal fuse
- Unplug the fryer and let it cool.
- Remove screws on the back or bottom panel.
- Find the thermal fuse near the heating element.
- Take a photo before unplugging wires.
- If the fuse is black or broken, replace it with the same type.
If the fuse is soldered and you don’t solder, take it to a repair shop.
Real fix examples
- 5096TS, no power: Outlet was bad. Resetting the GFCI fixed it.
- 3061TS, shut down mid-cook: Cooling helped once. Replacing the thermal fuse fixed it for good.
- 196DT, flickering lights: Plug was loose. Pushing it in firm solved the problem.

Repair vs. Replace — simple tips
- Warranty: Call PowerXL.
