Buying a replacement pull off overall length is the fastest way to end up with a piece of hardware that sits an eighth of an inch off your existing holes. The measurement that actually decides whether new hardware drops straight in is center-to-center spacing, the distance from the center of one mounting screw hole to the center of the other. Get that number right and most swaps take a screwdriver and five minutes.

Measuring Center-To-Center On Hardware That’s Still Installed

Leave the pull on the drawer if you can — measure the two hole centers in the drawer front after backing one screw out far enough to expose the hole. Sliding the old pull off entirely isn’t necessary for this method, and it saves you from losing screws behind the cabinet.

Work in this order:

  1. Back out one mounting screw a few turns so the hole in the drawer face is visible.
  2. Hook a tape measure or ruler on the center of that exposed hole.
  3. Read the distance to the center of the second hole — not to its edge, and not to the end of the pull. The center of the hole is the reference point.
  4. Write the number down in both inches and millimeters before you shop.

A tape measure with a sliding hook works fine. For anything under 5 inches, a steel ruler tends to give a cleaner read because you can sight the hole centers directly.

The Size Numbers You’ll Actually See On Listings

US hardware listings cluster around a handful of standard center-to-center spacings, and most drawer pulls sold in the US fall into one of them. Hardware guides commonly cite 3 in (76 mm), 3.75 in (96 mm), 5 in (128 mm), 6.25 in (160 mm), 7.5 in (192 mm), and 8.8 in (224 mm).

Two things trip people up at this stage. First, overall pull length and center-to-center spacing are different numbers — a pull listed as 5 inches long might have a 3-inch hole spread. Second, the measurement is in the drawer front, not in the pull itself, so don’t measure the hardware in your hand and assume it transfers.

When Projection Actually Matters

Projection is how far the pull stands off the drawer face. Measure it from the flat face of the drawer to the outermost point of the pull with the pull installed. If a neighboring door, appliance, or drawer front swings past that spot, a longer projection can catch on it. Standard pulls usually clear fine; oversized bar pulls on shallow cabinets are where clearance issues show up. This measurement only affects feel and clearance — it doesn’t change hole compatibility.

There’s no adapter that bridges a half-inch gap safely, so treat mismatch as a woodworking job, not a hardware problem.

For brand-new drawers with no existing holes, Lowe’s install guidance suggests taping off the drawer centerline with masking tape, marking it, then dividing the pull’s center-to-center number by 2 to place each hole an equal distance from that line. A design guideline several hardware guides use is a pull roughly one-third the width of the drawer for visual balance — that’s a style rule, not a replacement requirement, so ignore it if you’re matching existing holes.

What To Check Before You Drill

  • Hold the new pull against the drawer front and confirm both holes line up with the old ones before driving a single screw.
  • Look for old finish marks, rub rings, or faded patches left by the previous pull. A larger replacement covers them; a smaller one leaves a visible footprint.
  • Check whether the new screws seat fully in the old holes — worn holes may need a slightly longer screw or a dab of wood filler.

Once the pull is snug, the drawer front should sit flush with no rocking and the pull should feel firm with no play when you tug it.
