How to Fix Bathroom Door Hinges? | Stop the Sag

A sagging bathroom door usually comes down to loose screws; if the screws spin freely, the wood behind them is stripped, and the fix takes about ten minutes with wood glue and toothpicks.

A bathroom door that scrapes the frame or won’t latch is rarely a hinge failure. It’s almost always the screws working loose from the jamb, or the wood around them giving out under the door’s weight. Fixing it is a simple DIY job: tighten what’s loose first, then repair the wood if the screws no longer hold. Depending on the situation, the job takes anywhere from a few minutes to an afternoon.

Why Your Bathroom Door Sags

The most common cause is the hinge screws slowly backing out of the door jamb, pulled by years of the door’s weight hanging on them. In a bathroom specifically, the extra humidity from showers can cause the wooden frame to swell and shrink, accelerating the loosening process. If the screws spin when you turn them, that’s a clear sign the hole’s threads have stripped out.

Before you do anything else, look closely at the hinge itself. If the metal is bent, cracked, or the pin looks worn, that’s a separate problem you can inspect for. For a first attempt, however, grip the door at its edge and lift slightly; if it moves up and down against the hinge pin, the problem is more likely the hinge pin wearing, which means a replacement hinge usually solves it. Otherwise, the screws are your prime suspect.

Occasionally the issue is with the frame itself, especially if the hinge leaf is pulling away from a soft or water-damaged jamb. In this case the hinge needs to bite into fresh wood further inside the framing, which we cover in the longer-screw method below.

The Quick Fix: Tightening the Screws

Start with the simplest possible solution before you attempt any disassembly.

  1. Open the door fully and, if you have one, slide a thin shim (a few folded paper pieces or a small wood wedge) under the bottom edge near the hinge side to take the weight off the hinges.
  2. Find the correct screwdriver bit for the screw head. A Phillips-head screw that’s been painted over can be tricky; use a slightly larger bit if you need better grip.
  3. Turn each screw clockwise until snug. Do not overtighten. The moment you feel resistance, stop.
  4. Re-test the door. If it still sags, try longer screws (see below).

If a screw simply spins without catching any wood, you’ve found a stripped hole. Move on to the durable repair in the next section. Over-tightening a stubborn screw here can strip the wood further, turning a ten-minute job into a bigger repair.

Fixing Stripped Screw Holes with Wood Glue

When the screw threads have nothing to bite into, the first fix is to fill the hole with new wood material and re-drive the screw. Toothpicks or matchsticks are the classic hack because they’re easy to pack in and glue bonds them firmly to the surrounding jamb material.

  1. Remove the loose screw. In most cases, you can do this while the door is still hanging, but it’s easier if the door is supported or lifted slightly by that wedge under its edge.
  2. Dip the tip of each toothpick or matchstick in standard wood glue and push them into the hole. Pack as many as will fit snugly, turning slightly to coat them. A thin wooden dowel works too.
  3. Snap or trim the sticks flush with the surface of the hinge mortise using a utility knife or flush-cut saw. Let the glue cure fully — read the glue bottle for its specific dry time; most wood glues need several hours.
  4. After curing, drill a new pilot hole where the screw will go. This prevents the hardened filler from cracking when you drive the screw.
  5. Reinstall the screw, turning it gently until snug.

This method works reliably on wooden jambs. The glue and toothpicks form a solid plug that gives the screw fresh wood to grip. If the hole is very large or the jamb feels spongy, the longer-screw approach below is often a better bet.

Using Longer Screws to Reach the Framing

When a stripped hole is too far gone, or the screw holes in the jamb side of the hinge keep failing, a longer screw can bypass the problem wood entirely. The goal is for the screw to bite into the solid 2×4 framing stud behind the jamb.

Replace only one screw per hinge leaf with a longer one. Crucially, you must ensure it doesn’t protrude through the opposite side of the jamb, so check the depth carefully. Drill a pilot hole first to guide the screw straight into the framing, then drive the screw until snug.

If the wood behind the jamb is also rotten, you’re looking at a bigger framing repair, but that’s rare in a bathroom.

When You Should Replace the Hinge Entirely

Repair isn’t always the answer. If the hinge leaves are bent, the barrel is cracked, or the door is warped, no amount of screw tightening will help. In these cases, replacing the hinge is the fastest, most reliable fix. Remove the hinge by supporting the door, unscrewing the leaves, and lifting the door off. Take the old hinge to a hardware store to match the size, shape, and screw-hole pattern.

Some specialized concealed or system hinges are explicitly designed to be replaced rather than repaired. If your bathroom door uses one of these, the manufacturer’s guidance typically points to swapping the unit entirely. For a standard residential hinge, replacement is a simple swap that costs a few dollars and takes fifteen minutes.

  • Over-tightening screws: The wood gives, not the screw. Stop at the first firm resistance.
  • Wrong screwdriver size: A loose fit strips the screw head, making removal a nightmare.
