The Valve: The Heart of Every Faucet

The valve is the internal assembly that actually stops or starts the flow. When the handle is closed, the valve presses against a seat to form a watertight seal. Parts and Flow: What Happens When You Turn the Handle?

The typical bathroom faucet consists of a few recognizable parts: the body, spout, handle(s), valve or cartridge, aerator, and the supply lines that connect to your home’s plumbing. Some designs also include O-rings for sealing and a pop-up stopper for the drain.

Here’s the flow sequence in a standard single-handle mixing faucet:
