The best bathroom lighting plan spreads light across three layers instead of relying on one overhead fixture. Ambient light fills the room, task light at the vanity handles grooming, and accent light adds mood. For a bathroom that flatters skin tones and works well, that layered approach matters more than any single fixture type.

Why Overhead Lights Fail At The Vanity

One fixture centered on the ceiling throws shadows down across your face, which makes shaving, makeup, and skincare harder. The fix is placing task lighting at the mirror, not above it.

Wall sconces mounted on both sides of the mirror give the best results. Light from both sides meets in the middle and cancels out facial shadows. In a standard bathroom, source guidance puts sconces at 60–70 inches from the floor depending on mirror height. Space them 36–40 inches apart, adjusted to your mirror width. Over a wider double vanity, a single longer bath bar above the mirror works, but side fixtures still reduce shadows better.

For a standard tub-shower combo, the safest choice is wet-rated in the shower zone and at least damp-rated within three feet of the tub edge. Fixture ratings are not interchangeable—dry-rated lights have no place in humid bathroom air.

Check with a licensed electrician about NEC rules in your area before installing anything permanent. Bathroom wiring falls under code enforcement, and local rules matter.

Adding Accent Light For Depth And Mood

Accent lighting turns a functional bathroom into a comfortable one, and it needs only a few fixtures. Recessed niche lights in a tub wall, backlit mirrors, or LED strips under a floating vanity add depth without washing out the room. A mini-pendant or small chandelier over a freestanding tub doubles as a focal point. Keep accent lights on a separate switch so you can run soft light for late nights without turning on the main glare.

Dimmers across all three layers give you both bright task mornings and dim evening soaks. Zoning switches separately lets you light only the zone you are using. Natural daylight helps too—use window treatments that let sun in while keeping privacy.

For light quality, choose fixtures with a color rendering index of 90 or higher at the vanity. High CRI makes skin tones and makeup colors look accurate instead of washed out.
