A 12-volt lighting run that dims at the far end is almost always a sizing problem, not a bad fixture. Working out how to size a 12 volt transformer for LED and outdoor lighting takes about ten minutes of arithmetic, and it keeps you from buying the job twice.
The math is short. What trips people up is the wattage printed on the box, the gap between watts and volt-amps, and the wire running out to the last light.
How Much Transformer Capacity Do You Actually Need?
Total the rated wattage of every fixture on the run, add 20% headroom, and round up to the next standard size. A 400-watt load works out to 500 VA, so a 600 VA transformer is the pick.
Two numbers get confused here. LED fixtures are often sold with an “incandescent equivalent” rating on the package, and that figure is not what the transformer sees. A fixture sold as a 60-watt equivalent might draw around 9 watts, so use the wattage on the fixture’s own label or spec sheet.
Then there’s watts versus VA. The two match only when the driver’s power factor is 1.0, and LED drivers often run below that. When a spec sheet lists power factor, divide watts by it to get VA and plan from the larger number.
Standard transformer sizes run 150 VA, 300 VA, 600 VA, 900 VA, and 1200 VA. Most residential jobs land in the 150 VA to 600 VA range with a 12-volt AC magnetic transformer.

Sizing A 12 Volt Transformer: The Step Order That Works
Run the steps in order, because the last two decide whether the light at the end of the run looks like the light at the start. Skip them and you can end up with a transformer that is technically big enough and still disappointing.
Wire gauge sets a hard ceiling on how much one 12-volt run can carry. FX Luminaire’s 12-volt circuiting limits list 16/2 cable at 10.4 amps and 125 watts, 14/2 at 12 amps and 144 watts, 12/2 at 16 amps and 192 watts, 10/2 at 24 amps and 288 watts, and 8/2 at 25 amps and 300 watts. Once a run gets long, those caps matter more than the transformer’s total rating.
- List every fixture on the circuit with its actual wattage or VA.
- Add them for a total circuit load.
- Multiply by 1.2, or divide by 0.8, for the minimum transformer capacity.
- Round up to the next standard size.
- Check the transformer’s output taps against the farthest fixture’s input range.
- Check wire gauge and run length so voltage drop doesn’t push that farthest fixture too low.
- Confirm dimming and control compatibility before you buy.
One part is not optional: the transformer has to be built for low-voltage outdoor lighting.
