A rail that looks plenty tall can still miss by 2 inches, because the measurement starts at the top of the mattress and a thick mattress quietly eats the difference. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes the bunk bed railing height rules, and the same limits sit in the federal standard at 16 CFR Part 1213. Here’s what each number means and how to check a bed you already own.

How Tall Must A Bunk Bed Guardrail Be?

Two parts of that sentence get measured wrong all the time. The 5 inches runs from the mattress surface, not from the slats or platform below it, so a rail can clear the wooden base by 9 inches and still fail once a pillow-top goes on. And the rail’s own height proves nothing by itself — a short rail over a thin mattress passes, while a tall one over a thick mattress fails.

That 30-inch figure is measured to the underside of the foundation, not to the mattress.
