Where DIY Installations Go Wrong

AFCI work is panel work, and it carries one non-negotiable rule: the power comes off first, from the breaker in the main panel when you are working inside a sub-panel. Beyond that, the mistakes cluster tightly.

The load neutral has to land on the correct neutral terminal, and manufacturer instructions call out miswiring it specifically — this is not a minor labeling issue, because the breaker’s detection circuit needs a clean reference to judge the circuit’s current. In many residential panels the AFCI also has a coiled white neutral lead — called a pigtail — that must land on the panel’s neutral bar. Skip it, or land it somewhere convenient instead, and the breaker will not function as designed.
