Test a sump pump by pouring water into the pit until the float lifts and the pump runs, then confirm it drains and shuts off.

A sump pump that fails during a storm can mean a flooded basement, and the only way to know yours works is to test it before you need it. Here’s the order that works.
Prep: Cut Power and Clear the Pit First
Before touching anything, unplug the pump and switch off its breaker. Working on a pump that’s still wired to live power is how people get shocked.
While the power is off, lift the lid and look inside. Clear any debris around the pump inlet, and confirm the float switch moves freely on its rod or tether. A float jammed against the basin wall is the most common reason a pump never turns on.
How to Test a Sump Pump with Water
Pour water into the pit slowly — a bucket at a time — until the water level lifts the float to its “on” position. The pump should kick on, pull the water down, and shut off once the basin is mostly empty.
Watch two things while it runs. First, confirm water actually exits the discharge line outside your home. Second, watch the shut-off: the pump should stop on its own when the level drops, not run continuously. Run it through two or three cycles to be sure the float isn’t sticking at either end.
If it does, your float switch and motor are both responding. If it doesn’t, you’ve found your problem.
When the Pump Won’t Run: Testing the Motor and Float
A pump that stays silent when the float rises has one of two faults: a dead motor or a stuck switch.
Test the motor first.
Test the float switch separately. Float-switch testing depends on the model — tethered, vertical, and electronic switches all behave differently. Some floats need to be nearly vertical before they trigger; others trip at a much lower angle.
