Choosing the Right Location for the Barrel

Walk around your house and pick the downspout closest to the garden area you water most. The ground beneath it needs to be reasonably flat, because a water barrel full of water weighs over 400 pounds when filled to capacity — and that weight will settle and shift on uneven soil.

Roof runoff collects bird droppings, dust, and debris, so keep collected water outside or reserve it for non-edible plants unless you filter and treat it properly.
