Using a propane heater safely means placing it on a stable surface, connecting it correctly, lighting it by the book, and keeping it ventilated.

Propane heaters are simple machines, but the difference between a warm patio and a trip to the ER comes down to setup habits. Whether you’re heating a garage workshop or a backyard hangout, the steps below cover placement, hookup, lighting, and the mistakes that cause most accidents.
Place The Heater Correctly Before Anything Else
Positioning is the first safety decision, so make it before you even open the tank valve. The heater needs a stable, level, nonflammable surface — concrete, brick, or bare dirt works; dry grass and wooden decks do not. The Propane Education & Research Council’s patio heater safety guidance says to keep the heater at least five feet from exits and foot traffic, and well away from doors, windows, and air intakes.
Combustibles are the other big risk. Paper, plastics, clothing, and tent walls all need distance. If the unit is a tank-mounted style, the flame must never point at the cylinder.
Never operate a heater in a tent, camper, or enclosed porch — the carbon monoxide buildup can be fatal. Even “indoor-safe” models with oxygen depletion sensors need real ventilation and only work as designed in open, airy spaces.
Inspect, Connect, And Check For Leaks
Before lighting, do a quick damage check on every piece. Look for cracks in the hose, dents or rust on the cylinder, and frayed fittings. Any damage means a replacement before use — never patch a propane hose. Use only the hoses and regulators rated for your specific heater model.
Hookup is two connections: the regulator to the tank valve, and the hose to the heater’s inlet. Tighten both hand-tight, then check for leaks with a 50/50 mix of water and dish soap brushed over every joint. Bubbles mean a leak — tighten the fitting and test again. Never use a flame to find a leak.
The tank valve itself is the main shutoff. Know where it is and practice turning it. You’ll need it fast if something goes wrong.
Light It In The Right Order
One failed ignition sets off a gas cloud, so the lighting sequence protects you twice. The standard manufacturer order, with slight variations by model, is:
- Turn the control knob to OFF and wait two to three minutes if the unit was recently used.
- Open the tank valve slowly — a fast open can trip the excess-flow valve and cut gas supply.
- Turn the control knob to PILOT and press it in to start gas flow.
- Hold the knob in and press the igniter button, or use a long-reach lighter at the pilot opening.
- Keep holding the knob for 30 seconds so the thermocouple warms; then release.
- Turn the knob to ON and adjust the heat output.
You’ll know ignition worked when the pilot flame stays lit after you release the knob. If the pilot won’t stay lit, the thermocouple may be dirty or the gas flow is wrong — don’t hold the knob for minutes trying to force it.
If you ever smell gas during lighting or the heater fails to ignite, close the tank valve immediately, leave the area, and let the gas dissipate before touching anything. North Carolina’s propane heater safety standards say to contact your supplier or fire department if the smell persists after airing out.
Run It, Monitor It, Shut It Down
Once running, the heater needs supervision. Never leave it unattended or sleep near it. Keep children and pets outside the clearance zone you set in step one.
Shutdown is the reverse of startup: turn the control knob to OFF first, then close the tank valve. That order empties the hose and stops any slow leak at the fitting. Let the unit cool completely before moving or covering it.
The most common failures all trace to skipped basics: hoses left outside in weather, tanks stored indoors, or clearances ignored after the first use.
