Mounting and Inspecting Your Grinder
The grinder needs a solid, permanent home. Mount it firmly to a sturdy bench or a dedicated stand — a loose or vibrating grinder drifts off the work and pulls the workpiece into the wheel. The mounting bolts should be tight enough that the unit never shifts while you work.
Before each use, do a quick visual inspection. Look for cracks, chips, or flat spots on the wheel surface. A damaged wheel can shed fragments at speed, so check both wheels if your grinder has two. Starting the Machine and Grinding Technique
Stand slightly to one side when you flip the switch. This keeps you out of the line of fire if the wheel were to fracture on startup. Let the grinder come up to full speed before touching anything to the wheel — a cold, spinning-up wheel grabs material differently than one at speed.
Once it runs, press the work against the wheel face with light, steady pressure. Let the abrasive do the cutting; leaning into the wheel forces it, risks kickback, and can overheat the metal. Keep the work moving in a steady pattern. Never grind on the wheel’s side unless that wheel is designed for side grinding. And don’t force the material at odd angles into the gap between the rest and the wheel — keep it flat on the rest where it belongs.
Wheel Selection, Common Mistakes, and Shutoff
The wheel’s speed rating must match or exceed your grinder’s RPM. A wheel rated for a lower speed can come apart at the grinder’s faster spin, which is a serious hazard. Match the wheel to the material you’re cutting as well. Some grinders aren’t built for non-metal materials, and grinding aluminum or magnesium is out for many — these soft metals can load up the wheel and cause it to fail. Most accidents on a bench grinder trace back to a few habits. Grinding with missing or loose guards, leaving the tool rest gap too wide, and using a cracked wheel top the list.
