Safety Clearance: The Space You Cannot Skip
Before you dig a single post hole, measure the fall zone. This is the area a child could land in, and it is larger than most people expect.

Cedar and redwood also work well and look nicer, but they cost more. Whatever wood you choose, seal it with a high-quality exterior wood finish. For a standard A-frame swing set, you need two A-shaped ends connected by a top beam. The beam needs to be thick enough to support both the weight of the swing and the dynamic load of a child pumping. Anchor the posts in concrete, at least 18 to 24 inches deep, below the frost line if you live in a cold climate. A swing set that is not anchored will eventually shift, and shifting means a leaning frame and a dangerous swing path.
Load-bearing hardware is not the place to save money. Use galvanized or stainless steel eye bolts, lag screws, and chains designed for outdoor use. The chains should be rated for the weight they carry, with a healthy safety margin.
