An IP rating on a 12 volt LED light measures how well its enclosure keeps out dust and water — it is not a promise that the whole fixture can be submerged or used anywhere wet.
A light marked “waterproof” with no code attached tells you nothing you can plan around.
Here is what each code actually guarantees, according to IEC 60529, the international enclosure standard the whole system is built on.
How The Two Digits Work
Every IP code is two numbers: the first covers solids and dust, the second covers water. The standard applies to enclosures for electrical equipment rated up to 72.5 kV, and the first digit runs from 0 to 6 while the second runs from 0 to 8.
That split matters because the two protections fail independently. A fixture rated IP6X is dust-tight, but the X means water protection was never tested — a common trick on budget listings that show a high-looking number with no water rating behind it.
On the water side, the second digit climbs through very different threats:
- 0 — no protection at all.
- 4 — splash resistance from any direction; occasional splashing only.
- 5 — low-pressure water jets from any direction; dust-tight on the solids side.
- 6 — powerful water jets, including heavy spray and wash-down.
- 7 — temporary immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
- 8 — prolonged or continuous immersion, but only to the depth and duration the manufacturer’s own test conditions define.
Notice what digit 8 does not say: there is no universal depth. The number alone will not tell you — the spec sheet will.
What Each Rating Handles In Real Installations
For outdoor use, IP65 is the practical floor and IP67 is where genuine submersion begins. Matching the code to the actual exposure is the whole job, and it is easy to overbuy or underbuy if you only compare the highest number on the shelf.

A higher number is not automatically the better purchase. Tighter sealing traps heat, which shortens LED lifespan on high-output fixtures, and IP68 housings cost more and are harder to service. Match the rating to the location and stop there.
The bigger trap sits upstream of the fixture. An IP68 light still fails if its connectors, power supply, and splices are not rated for the same exposure, because the water gets in through the weakest point in the run. What The Rating Does Not Cover
An IP rating covers ingress protection only — nothing else. It says nothing about impact resistance, corrosion resistance, electrical safety, or expected product life, and it does not replace the electrical requirements your 12V system has to meet.
Impact protection is a separate scale entirely: the IK classification. A fixture can be completely dust-tight and shatter the first time a lawnmower throws a rock at it.
“12 volt” is likewise a separate fact. It describes the operating voltage, not the sealing, and the two specs never substitute for each other. A light can be 12V and completely unprotected, or 12V and fully submersible — only the IP code tells you which.
The working rule for any wet installation: every component in the run — fixture, connectors, power supply, and splices — needs a rating that matches the exposure, and the assembly is only as protected as its weakest part.

Is IP65 enough for outdoor lights?
For most exposed outdoor installations, IP65 is the practical minimum. It is dust-tight and handles rain and low-pressure hose spray from any direction. If the fixture sits where it can be hit by standing water, flooding, or a pressure washer, step up to IP66, IP67, or IP68 based on the real exposure.
Can I use IP67 lights underwater?
Only briefly. IP67 means the enclosure survives temporary immersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes under test conditions — it is not a rating for continuous submersion. For permanent underwater use in a pond or fountain, you need IP68, and you need the manufacturer’s stated depth and time limits.
Does a higher IP rating always mean a better light?
No. Higher sealing restricts heat dissipation, which can shorten LED lifespan, and it raises cost and service difficulty. The right rating is the one that matches where the fixture actually lives. Buying IP68 for a covered porch adds expense without adding real protection.
