Mistakes That Throw Off The Conductor Count
Three mistakes account for most wrong answers: using a fill percentage meant for one or two conductors, treating trade size as actual diameter, and pulling numbers from an aged chart.
- Trade size is not inside diameter. A 1/2 inch EMT measures 0.622 inch inside, not 0.5.
- Wrong fill percentage. Two conductors get 31%, never 40%. Only runs of three or more use the 40% column.
- Mixed conduit types. EMT, RMC, IMC, and PVC Sch 40 each have their own internal area, so counts differ even at the same nominal size.
- Aged tables. Some PDFs still reference 1996 NEC tables and label themselves reference-only.
- Insulation type. THHN, THWN, and THWN-2 share counts; XHHW and larger cable assemblies do not.
